JOURNAL / OWNER EXPECTATIONS
What Cat Owners Really Want From a Scratching Post

We reviewed 1,000+ Amazon US customer reviews across 10 cat scratching products. The recurring priorities were practical: cats should want to use the surface, the product should stay steady, and assembly and replacement should be straightforward.
The review analysis recorded 104 low-star comments about instability and 105 positive comments about sturdiness. Stability appeared on both sides of the conversation. For retail buyers, that makes the complete structure a useful starting point for product development.
Start with the moment of use
A cat stretches upwards, grips the surface and pulls. A compact product may look balanced in a photograph, yet feel very different if the base slides or the joint moves.
Our recommendation is to evaluate the floor contact, base footprint, weight distribution and post connection together. Ask how the assembled sample performs under agreed conditions. Weight is useful information, but it cannot explain the whole experience.
Show the usable scratching area
Owners praised products that gave larger cats room to stretch. This points to a clearer way to describe size: show the exposed scratching height, post diameter and approach space, alongside overall dimensions.
Decorative caps, raised bases and interrupted surfaces can reduce the area available for scratching. Use a dimensioned image to help customers choose for their cat and home. A "large" label leaves too much unexplained.
Make material descriptions specific
Thirty low-star comments questioned material identity. These are owner perceptions, but they highlight a need for clearer information.
Identify the scratching surface separately from the core, backing, binding and base. Explain whether it uses wrapped rope or woven material. Match the description to the approved sample and supplied product. Buyers need to understand the construction as well as recognise a material name.
Treat assembly as part of the product
The analysis recorded 85 positive comments about easy assembly, alongside 16 low-star comments about missing parts, instructions or alignment.
For the owner, opening the box and fitting the hardware are part of the purchase. Review the retail package with the same care as the finished appearance: identifiable parts, a complete kit and clear diagrams. Assemble a packed sample using the intended instructions, then check the final setup.
Plan what happens when sisal wears
Requests to replace worn sisal raise a simple question: must the owner replace the whole product when only the scratching surface needs attention?
A replaceable surface could preserve a usable structure. To make that practical, define compatible parts, clear fitting instructions and ongoing availability. Compare the replacement price and delivery cost with buying a new product before promising savings.
Design for cats and the people they live with
For Terrafaser, these findings connect with Interwoven Living: considering feline use, household routines and the product's place in the home together.
Build the brief around four questions. Can the cat reach and engage with the surface? Does the assembled product remain steady? Can the owner assemble and maintain it? What happens after wear?
Share your target households, channel and product format with Terrafaser. We can use those details to focus discussions about materials, construction and sourcing with our manufacturing partners.
